Friday night and you are hanging out at some friend’s house when it hits you. You have ‘got to go’. You politely excuse yourself to use the old baño. When the dirty business is done you go to flush the toilet. Easy, right?
Not so fast. Instead of it all going down you see it starts coming up.
What to do?
Look behind the toilet. No plunger. Look under the sink. No plunger. Look in the shower. No plunger.
Sheepishly go to the kitchen and in a very low voice you ask, “uh, do you have a plunger?” To your dismay the answer is very embarrassed, “No. Oh no! We have been meaning to buy one of those and it just hasn’t come up until now.” (No pun intended).
Ok. So, you obviously have a crisis on your hands and we dear friend have a few ideas for you in this ‘pinch’.
Personally, we have not tried all of the methods below to see if they actually work, (clearing throat) because we are the owners of a great rubber plunger… but we sure would love to have you comment below if you try them and they work! And even if they don’t work, we would love to have you share your experience anyways so we can share a good laugh!
5 FASTEST AND EASIEST WAYS TO UNCLOG A TOILET WITHOUT A TOILET PLUNGER
- The Third Times a Charm Trick– It is likely that in your panic you already tried to flush twice. However, it is very possible that if you just walk away… place an “Out of Service” sign on the bathroom door, and then come back in 10 or 15 minutes… you might just find that next flush to be the magical one that makes all your dreams come true!
- Big ol’ Water Bucket Method– Fill a bucket or container up with 3 or 4 gallons of water (hot is ideal) and find a muscle man to hold that up and dump directly into the toilet bowl from above the waist level. Be sure that the toilet seat is up and there is nothing around that you don’t want “splashed”. If the clog is not too serious or if there is no water to the toilet this can do the trick.
- The Old Mop and Plastic Bag- Grab your mop (you may never want to use this again to clean) and cover the head with a plastic bag. Plunge away.
- Chemistry Class to the Rescue– OK, so this is a two for one. What ingredients do you have on hand? Do you have dish-washing soap? Do you have Baking Soda and White Vinegar? Depending on what you have available you have a pretty good chance of getting that toilet unclogged. You can squirt (a few good squirts) of dish-washing liquid followed by a full pot of hot (not boiling) water and see what that does. Otherwise, you can pour 1 cup of Baking Soda into the toilet bowl, wait a few minutes. Then dump 1 cup of White Vinegar into the toilet bowl and wait a few more minutes. Then take that big pot of hot (not boiling) water and dump it in from nice and high! Worst-case scenario your bathroom will smell a lot better than it did!
- And of Course the Ever Faithful Wire Coat Hanger- Seriously one of the most useful things we can own – in addition to being handy to hang clothes on, to roast marshmallows with, and unlock your car door when you have left the keys inside… it seems they can you can also help you out in the bathroom. Simply unravel one, bend the end into a curve, and cover with tape (you want to make sure there are no sharp points so you don’t scratch the toilet), and with some rubber gloves on go fishing… I mean go ahead and wiggle it around and see if you can’t loosen something up in there. Once you think you have hit the gold and loosened it up… then give it a few minutes and give that flush a try!
Just buy a toilet plunger already. And if your friends don’t have plunger get them one too! They really do make a great housewarming gift! Super classy. Of course, not all toilet plungers are created equal so choose carefully!
